Speech-language Pathology Services are provided in acute inpatient and outpatient clinical settings, and at the Yuma Cancer Center, providing many opportunities for interdisciplinary consultation. Our inpatient services are provided to people of all ages, from infants to adults, to the geriatric population. With adults we assess, diagnose, and treat oral motor, swallowing, cognitive-linguistic, speech, voice, and language disorders that may result from a disease, accident, or from an exacerbation of an already existing impairment or disease.

We also see many patients in our intensive care unit who often demonstrate feeding or swallowing deficits during recovery from severe acute illnesses, including head and neck cancers. With many patients, our Speech-language Pathologists (SLP’s) work closely with occupational and physical therapy, nursing, respiratory therapy, case managers, and attending medical providers to provide the best care.

When recommended, objective assessment of swallowing is offered via Video Fluoroscopic Swallow Study (VFSS) or Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES), in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Our certified staff provides mentorship and guidance to those SLPs who have either just completed their MBSImP/FEES certification or are working toward their certification. We also offer mentorship for students and clinical fellows, which is a great opportunity for our staff SLP’s to provide or receive mentorship.
